Values are typical, from each manufacturer's data sheet: printed XY-flat bars at 100% infill. Tensile per ISO 527, HDT at 0.45 MPa per ISO 75, except where a row is noted. Your parts will come in lower with less infill or Z-direction loading. Don't use these numbers as a spec limit; test your own part. ULTEM™ is a trademark of SABIC. Kynar® is a trademark of Arkema. Onyx™ is a trademark of Markforged.

3DXTech REACH / RoHS3 statement (2021)

Printing difficulty

How hard is it
to print?

The ratings come from 3DXTech and from years of printing these ourselves and troubleshooting with customers. They're a rough guide, not a rule.

Novice

Prints fine on an entry-level printer with stock settings.

Intermediate

A few months of experience on a decent enclosed printer. Fiber grades need a hardened nozzle.

Advanced

Over a year of printing on a commercial-grade printer with a heated chamber.

Expert

Lots of experience on a high-temp printer: 400°C+ hot end, 160°C bed, hot chamber. Think 22 IDEX.

Print settings

What we actually
run

These are our starting points, dialed in on our own printers. They won't always match the temps on a data sheet, since the manufacturer's test printer isn't yours. Start here, then tune.

Dry times are a range because it depends on how wet the spool got. A spool that sat open for a month needs the long end. Anneal only when the data sheet or your part calls for it.

Reading the sheets

TDS or SDS?

Technical data sheet

What the part can do

Strength, stiffness, heat deflection, flammability rating and the print conditions the test bars were made at. This is the one your engineer wants when picking a material.

The numbers come from printed bars, which is good. They're also best-case bars: 100% infill, laid flat. Load a part in Z and expect a lot less.

Safety data sheet

How to handle it safely

Hazards, fume and decomposition products, fire fighting, storage and disposal. This is the one your EHS team asks for before a new material comes into the building.

Some older listings call it an MSDS. Same document, older name.

Wet filament is the #1 reason a high-temp print fails. Here's how we dry ours.

FAQ

Data sheet questions

Why are my parts weaker than the data sheet?

The sheet is printed at 100% infill with bars lying flat, so every layer runs along the pull. Real parts have walls, infill and layer lines across the load. Z-direction strength is often half of XY or less. Design for that and test your own part.

Why don't your print temps match the TDS?

The TDS lists the temps the manufacturer printed its test bars at, on its own printer. Our settings table is what works on ours. Hot end design, nozzle size and print speed all move the number. Start in the overlap and tune.

A sheet I need isn't here. Can you get it?

Yes. Hit “ask us” on that row or contact us with the material and what you need. We'll get it from the manufacturer.

Do I need to dry every spool?

Nylon, PC, PEEK, PEI and the sulfones, yes, every time. They pull water from the air and print badly wet. PVDF and PP+CF don't need it. See our drying guide for the method we use.

Which grade is right for my part?

Start with the temperature it has to survive and the printer you've got. If that doesn't narrow it down, talk to an engineer and we'll tell you what we'd run.

Not sure which material fits?

Tell us the part, the temperature and the printer. An engineer will tell you what we'd run.
